EMDR Basic Training
Am I eligible to take an EMDR Basic Training?
For the EMDR Basic Training, please see eligibility requirements here:Â https://www.emdria.org/emdr-training/eligibility-requirements-for-emdr-training/
Â
What does it mean that you’re EMDRIA Approved?
EMDRIA (EMDR International Association) is the professional organization founded by Francine Shipiro (the founder of EMDR) that is dedicated to supporting the advancement and practice of EMDR therapy.
Taking an EMDRIA Approved EMDR training ensures:
-
Quality and Credibility: EMDRIA Approved training programs meet high standards of quality, ensuring you're learning from experts with up-to-date research and best practices.
-
Comprehensive Curriculum: These programs provide thorough instruction in both the theory and practical application of EMDR, including all eight phases of treatment and case conceptualization.
-
Supervised Practice: Training includes supervised practice sessions to build your skills and confidence, ensuring you’re prepared to apply EMDR effectively with clients.
-
Eligibility for Certification: Completion of an EMDRIA Approved training is often required to pursue certification as an EMDR therapist, enhancing your professional credibility.
-
Networking Opportunities: These trainings connect you with a community of EMDR practitioners, offering ongoing learning and support.
-
Ethical and Professional Standards: Training adheres to ethical guidelines, which is crucial for ensuring client safety and effective outcomes.
-
Wider Client Acceptance: Many clients and organizations specifically seek therapists trained through EMDRIA Approved programs, which can expand your professional opportunities.
By choosing an EMDRIA Approved program, you ensure your training is recognized and respected across the mental health field.
Â
Why are the trainings live and not OnDemand?
EMDRIA requires that the EMDR Basic Training be conducted live. This not only ensures an interactive training with plenty of time to get your questions answered, but also facilitates the practicum part of the training where you will practice the EMDR skills in real time with colleagues.
Â
Do I have to attend all six days?
Yes. To receive your certificate of completion you must attend all six days in their entirety, in addition to completing the required 10 hours of consultation.
Â
Do I have to have my camera on for the training?
Yes. EMDRIA requires that you keep your camera on during this course to enhance engagement, foster connection, and encourage accountability. Overall, it supports a more focused and collaborative experience.
Â
How do the consultations work?
Each EMDR Basic Training Cohort will have an assigned EMDR Consultant. A schedule of consultation dates/times will be provided via email once training begins. You must attend seven 1.5 hour consultations to complete the training and receive your certificate of completion.
Â
When will I be able to use EMDR with my clients?
You are encouraged to start using EMDR with your clients after the first three days (Part 1) of training!Â
Â
When I’m done with the training, will I be EMDR Certified?
No. Once you have completed EMDR Basic Training, you are considered an EMDR trained clinician and will have everything you need to practice EMDR with clients.
EMDR Certification requires additional levels of continuing education and consultation in EMDR and is a separate process. View the Certification criteria on EMDRIA’s website here: https://www.emdria.org/emdr-training/emdr-certification-2/

EMDR Basic Training FAQs
Consultation FAQs
How many consultation hours do I need?
You need a total of 10 hours. These are split up between 5 hours after Part 1, and 5 hours after Part 2.
Â
Do I have to do 5 hours after Part 1 and 5 hours after Part 2?
Yes. Consultations are specific to the material learned and practiced in each part of the training.
Â
Other than attending, are there specific requirements for the consultations?
You are required to log in on time, stay for the whole time, and have your camera on. You are also required to present one case in between Part 1 and 2, and another case after Part 2. More information about presenting cases will be provided during the training.
Â
How long do I have to complete my 10 hours?
Per EMDRIA, you have 12 months from the first day of training to complete all 10 hours.
Â
What if I don’t complete them by the deadline?
If you don’t complete them within that 12-month timeframe, you are not eligible to call yourself EMDR Trained and you will have to retake the entire training. This is an EMDRIA requirement and is non-negotiable.
Â
How do I track my hours?
A link is provided in the “Consultations” tab of the course platform along with instructions on how to use the form.
Â
What if I can’t find the link for tracking hours that Stacy provided?
You can find everything you need to track your consultation hours in the “Consultations” tab of the course platform.
Â
What if I lose track of my hours / forget to track one?
You can use the same link to track a past date. Just click the link and choose the past date that you attended. If you forgot to log a date and don’t remember if/when you attended, you would have to attend another consultation group.
Â
Do I need to let you know which groups I plan on joining?
No, you do not. Just show up and track your attendance!
Â
What do I do after I complete my hours?
Nothing! When your cohort’s final consultation is complete, you will receive your certificate via email. This is sent out within two weeks of that final consultation group, and will come from my training coordinator, so keep an eye out for an email from [email protected].
Â
What if it’s been two weeks since my group’s consultation hours have been complete, and I still haven’t received my certificate?
Please check your spam/trash folder for the email from [email protected].
Â
What if my 10 hours were not complete when my cohort finished? How will you know when I have completed my hours?
We review consultation hour logs once a month and will email your certificate when we see that your hours have been completed. *You do not need to let us know when you have completed your hours.
Â
What if my 10 hours are complete but I’d like to continue attending the consultation groups?
While we love that you’re getting a lot out of the groups, we do ask that you stop attending after your 10 hours are complete. Without this limitation, the groups get too big to manage.
Â
I’d like to continue getting consultation!
Great! Please see our website at www. https://www.towsoncounselingcenter.com/emdr-consultation for on-going consultation groups for clinicians who have completed the basic training.Â
